Culligan FM-15RA Level 3 Faucet Filter Replacement Cartridge

Reviews of Culligan FM-15RA Level 3 Faucet Filter Replacement Cartridge

1.) A Water Faucet Filter That Actually Works!
Reviewed by: M. Schnitzer New York, NY USA
Rating:
The Brita faucet filter does an excellent job of filtering out impurities from tap water -- that is, when it manages to stay attached to the faucet. However, in my experience with it (two years and two different models), a tremendous amount of my valuable time was wasted trying to reattach the filter after it would repeatedly fall off. Although I have no direct experience with the Pur faucet filter, my understanding (drawn from other reviews) is that it suffers from the same problem.

Happily, after purchasing the CULLIGAN Faucet Filter several months ago, I can now report with confidence that it is plagued by no such similar defect. In other words, once attached, it remains firmly in place, and works every bit as effectively as rival brands. So for anyone who has tried those other brands and encountered endless frustration in endeavoring to keep them attached to the faucet, my advice is: Don't give up just yet! Try the Culligan model. It's solidly built, competitively priced, and replacement cartridges are readily available from Amazon. For me, at least, the Culligan at last put an end to the gratuitous, time-wasting burden of having to continually reattach a recalcitrant water filter.

Honestly it did take a couple of days for me to get used to the taste (I had been purchasing large water jugs) but it's not a bad taste, just not bottled water. Very easy to install and very easy to replace. I bought it b/c others mentioned the "default" is "no filter" so it makes it really easy when washing dishes. I live in an apartment and this was the perfect, temporary, inexpensive fix. I will say Amazon is one of the only places I can find the filter replacements, so stock up if you can.

I've used so many water filter systems for my faucet and these seem to be the only ones that work and last. Culligan is a good brand and builds very durable systems. What makes these filters really great is when it's time to change them, they just drop out from under the filters system, leaving no weird grease like fungus or growth that would occur with my other faucet filter systems. You just unscrew these filters to dispose and screw to replace.

Despite the reviews mentioning problems with the PUR faucet filter, I purchased a PUR faucet filter from a local in-store retailer. I returned it because it wouldn't thread onto my standard thread faucet... Next purchase was this Culligan filter. I can't comment on taste comparison as the PUR was defective out of the box, but the Culligan is superior construction, a quality product. As other reviewers states, the flow is decreased when using the filter. I'm quite happy with this purchase. Good quality product at great price with fast, free shipping when including an extra filter with the order. Great prices for the replacement filters also.

I wanted a simple but effective economical water filter for my apartment. I did considerable research (including purchasers of various products at Amazon) and at Consumers Reports as well as various internet sites. I've been using the Culligan FM-15RA level 3 filter for over a year now and besides being economical it is easy to install and to replace filters (every few months). Since purchasing, we had our water professionally checked for chlorine, bacteria and contaminents (metals etc) and it came through with fjying colors. We are very pleased with the unit.

We are very pleased with this filter. The part that screws onto the faucet is strong metal with a metal housing surround. It is much better made than the Pur filters I have repeatedly bought over the years and doesn't leak or have an easy way to break. It is also more compact and therefore doesn't get in the way of pots when I'm washing up. There may be a slight difference in taste with this filter as opposed to the pur filters. It's a tiny difference but would say that Pur might have the edge on taste. However, I would never go back to Pur unless they stop making them so that they break after a few months.

32.) Slow flow is the worst I have to say about this filter. Overall fantastic!
Reviewed by: Geekasaurus Rex Rochester, New York

This filter replacement is just fantastic. Here is how I break it down:

Cost (+)
Other filters are very expensive to replace. Brita and Pur use the Gillette model of sales. Cheap to purchase the whole unit but almost as expensive for the filters. Culligan replacement filters are really inexpensive and last longer.

Taste (+)
The taste is very good and almost has no taste at all, which I like.

Flow (-)
Admittedly the flow from this filter is not the highest. Maybe its just cleaning the water better?

I have no scientific data to compare the different filters, I am basing my 5 stars on cost, taste, ease of installation, leaking and overall happiness. For these criteria this filter is a winner.

Thanks for reading my review.

Reviewed by: Jonathan Birge Cambridge, MA
Rating:
At first, I did experience what a few of the other reviewers mentioned: after a short while the filter didn't appear to have any affect on the taste of the water.

The problem, I discovered, is that if you run the water through the filter too quickly (by opening up the tap all the way) the charcoal filter just can't do its job. As a rule of thumb, only allow enough flow through the filter so that it takes about 10-15 seconds to fill up a glass of water, and you'll have great tasting water. So, if you have high water pressure, make sure you don't open of the faucet all the way when filling a glass. There's just no way a filter as small as this can do its job properly at the max flow rate of most faucets. You really need a large in-line filter for that.

Note that this only applies to the filter's odor and taste removal properties, because this involves a chemical reaction of sorts where activated charcoal pulls chlorine (and other chemical) out of the water by binding to them. This is a completely different mechanism than what you normally associate with filtering, such as particles being caught in a mesh (which is essentially how the rest of the filter works in these, and so it's really only the odor and taste that is affected by the rate at which you let water through the Cullgan).

48.) Do Not Buy More Than One At A Time

52.) Better than nothing

Bottled water still tastes better, but the filter makes water straight from the tap drinkable. Running straight from the tap, we could smell the cholorine in the water. Short 'n' sweet: Works well, doesn't leak or break (unlike others we've tried), has a good flow when it's new. On the other hand, lasts only two months (approximately), flow slows to a trickle as it nears the end of its useful life, and is apparently non-reusable and non-recyclable, so you throw a big, heavy chunk o' plastic (and whatever else is in there) into the trash every two months. Ouch.

61.) Bye bye Brita's crappy plastic adapters...Hello all-metal adapters from Culligan
Reviewed by: Mickey Fountain Valley, CA USA
Rating:
I've returned/exchanged nearly half a dozen Brita on-tap systems because they can't seem to stay on my faucet with slightly amount of pressure causing me to get sprayed with water as the filter comes flying off. It's all because of the how the Brita is screwed onto the faucet, all the parts are plastic, meaning all the threading is plastic. Plus to make it worse, the threading themselves were very shallow, so they don't lock in well at all, so it's no surprised that any small amount of water pressure can pop it right off. I also looked into PUR, but they also has a plastic threading system, so I didn't even both to give them a try. So for the past year or so, I store drinking water by the gallon, and when I need to refill, I would re-attach the Brita filter and run my water very slowly....a pain in the @ss to say the least.

I'm so glad I stumbled on this faucet filtration system. Too bad major stores like Target don't carry this brand, or else I would've bought it a long time ago. Thank god for Amazon. The instant I saw the all-metal connectors, I knew this would be my solution. I quickly skimmed through the reviews and confirmed it uses metal adapters, and I bought it with no hesitation. Two days later, the filter shows up at my door step (I LOVE PRIME!!), and I installed it right away. I have a no-frills Kohler faucet and the adapters fits perfectly. Culligan provides the same size adapters that Brita provides.

The water tastes fine, I could not tell any difference from the Brita. The reason why I only gave it 4 stars was because the filtration is kinda slow and there's no internal LED to indicate it's time to change the filter.

PROS:
- All-metal adapters...no more flying filters and wet faces (I hate you Brita!)
- Cheaper than Brita and PUR
- Provides the taste quality as Brita

CONS:
- SLOW WATER FLOW. No matter how strong I turn my faucet on, the water flow out of the filter stays the same.
- No internal filter life indicator like the LED light in Brita
- Filter not carried in major chain stores, not that big of a deal since I buy all my stuff on Amazon anyways.

eitch tee tee pee colin TWO slashes powerpics.tripod DOT COM SLASH culligan SLASH culliganfilters DOT hypertextmarkuplanguage

I just purchased some FM-15RA replacement filters. In the past, I used to get the FM-15R models which were made in USA (not China like these newfangled 15RA ones).

Anyway, in the past, I'd found that some of the FM-15R ones would gush (rather than flow), so I phoned Culligan in mid 2008, and after LOTS of hassle, reached a guy who actually knew something.

He asked me to check whether any of the holes are black rather than white. He said that all the holes need to be white NOT black to filter well.

Sure enough, the ones which gushed had some black holes, so he sent replacements which all had pure white at the holes.

Anyway, now I received the ones made in China, which seem like junk, since they're lighter weight than the USA ones. Note i still have the USA ones, so i could compare.

Also, in the past, the USA ones did not emit what looks like vapor/smoke (probably the charcoal), upon screwing in & trying out for the first time. But the Chinese-made one DOES cause vapor/smoke (charcoal) to emit - which gives me the creeps, because it reminds me of when I erroneously poured Drano down the drain & it emitted similar vapor & hissed toxicly for a long time afterward to the extent that the clog-fixer-guy said it might have caused corrosion of pipes.

But above all:

I'm really baffled now, because these newfangled Chinese made FM-15-RA's all have greyish-black at the holes, rather than white. Yet the one I just now tried is not gushing (despite the blackish holes). Rather, it's flowing.

This is inconsistent with what the Culligan guy had told me regarding the FM-15R. Because going according to him, these newfangled ones ought to be gushing since the holes are not pure white, but rather greyish black??!!

So what am I to believe?

This is the only reason I would give it 2 stars. Surprisingly I dont see too many bad reviews or any that say that the replacement leaked. Wonder why.

filter replacement popped off of the filter housing and broke. Emailed Amazon and they are sending a replacement. First filter worked fine. Maybe just the occasional defect.

74.) TDS Measured (Not Good)
Reviewed by: Tired & Dirty
Rating:
I won't bother telling you how the water tastes, or any of that subjective stuff. I have a TDS meter (total dissolved solids) and here are my measurements (averages):

Regular tap before installation of Culligan:
265 PPM
Tap with Culligan filter ON:
265 PPM
Tap with Culligan filter BYPASSED:
250 PPM

Conclusion:
The filter does nothing in terms of reducing particulate matter. In fact, the Culligan's own aerator (used when the filter is bypassed) is better at that. It's basically the wire mesh thing.

My tap is roughly 8 times dirtier than store-bought spring water (35 PPM on average that I've measured). The filter did not help me there.

The only reason I am keeping the Culligan is it will HOPEFULLY KILL whatever those particles ARE. I would rather drink 265 PPM of dead, inert material than 265 potential sources of disease.

I am very disappointed. I'm not equipped to prove how much disease is being prevented. Fortunately, the product is relatively cheap, so it deserves at least two stars. I doubt any of the other filter products fare much better as I have tried Brita and PUR in the past (don't remember my measurements, but they were terrible as well as being expensive).

75.) A waste of money

I tried this thing on my kitchen sink because the water has a sulpher smell. It lasted about one week before the water trickled down to almost nothing and the smell came back. Don't know what to recommend, but definitely not this.

76.) Don't buy until you know the filter works with your faucet!
Reviewed by: Rocky

I bought the filter, but was not a good fit for my faucet because it sprayed water everywhere. I tried to return, but because it is a replacment cartridge you have to pay for the return shipping even though it was not used (they pay for the return shipping for the filter, just not the replacement cartridge). I tried to explain to them if I am returning the filter, then I do not need a replacement filter. My advice, don't buy the replacement until you know the filter works with your faucet.

i bought 6 filters and a new one works for about 3 days, then the flow goes down to about 1 gallon in 12 hours or so.

78.) Worthless
Reviewed by: nikilet USA

I love the size of this unit and the way it operates, but it does not filter the water. I tried this because the PUR units I've been using were developing leaks very soon after purchase. However, I'd rather spend money replacing PURs than purchasing an item like this that does not do a decent job filtering the water. The main thing I have to contend with is the chlorine taste and altho the filters say they remove chlorine, they do not.

I wrote to PUR advising them of the trouble I've been having with their units. They sent me a certificate for a free unit so after having this Culligan unit on for about a week I went and got my free PUR and put it on.

I also wrote to Culligan and their attitude was pretty much "tough luck." These units and the filters are much less expensive than PURs but they aren't worth their small cost for me because they don't work on chlorine.
